Here's what I do to get the functionality you desire, and how and why I do it:

I primarily use my DM as a control surface and as a central automatic digital patch bay to route all my electronic instruments and signals throughout my studio. The DM meter bridge can be tied to automatically follow the layer selected for the mixer, or you can set it manually with the buttons on the meter bridge itself or from the display controls. Most of my compositions use 24 tracks or fewer, so I direct the output of my DAW tracks (PT12, in my case) to tracks 25-48. I still mix in the box because I want to be able to save all settings of the mixer, plug-ins, and automation in my DAW so that all I have to do to return to a project is load it. BUT, by running the individual DAW tracks out to mixer tracks 25-48, I can display their levels on the meter bridge irrespective of what layer I'm using on the mixer itself, including the layer I use the most, the Remote layer.

    I hope this helps.
