DM-3200
HELP!!!
I'm hoping there is somebody still out there who does this.
I just acquired a Tascam DM-3200 and am in the process of cabling it up and..........uh-ehm........attempting (in vain) to set up the routing. I have the following setup:
- Sonar Producer 8.5 (Windows XP...I know, but it's stable.)
- MOTU 2408 mk2
- Tascam DM-3200 running firmware 1.70 (current)
- connected Word Clock BNC Cable (Motu as master, DM-3200 as slave)
- 3 TDIF cables all connected to respective banks A, B, C on Motu.
Word Clock is set to internal on Motu and working fine.
PCI-324 settings are set to TDIF on all 3 banks and Output to From Computer. I even have the automation configured and working over USB including time code.
What I want to do is use all 16 Mic/Line inputs on Tascam, route them - via TDIF to 2 MOTU Banks for 16 simultaneous inputs.
I then also want to be able to have the automation work (realizing there are only 16 faders avail on the REMOTE layer) - for mixing out of the Box - should I so choose. But will likely have more like 22 tracks.... (how do I get stereo out back from Motu onto DM-3200? Would/should I use Bank A for that as it echoes all first 8 on analog and 1-2 to stereo? Would I then have to use Bank's B and C for 16 M/L inputs from DM-3200. Would it be better to use ADAT cable for the "other" channels beyond the 16?
There certainly MUST be someone out there who has done this. If so - could someone screen-shot their input and output routing screens for M/L, TDIF Banks, Stereo outs, Bus outs, Aux, etc?
I'm currently getting a mic input signal on ch 1 of the board, but its not going anywhere....except echoing on channel 17.
I also would like - to run 4 separate monitor mixes from the board to avoid latency (if possible) and run those to an external 4 channel headphone amp. What is the best way to do this? If this is not possible, I'll go back to doing in Cuemix - but how best to cable out of Motu to headphone amp - even with Cuemix?
I'm obviously a newbie to this digital routing stuff and would REALLY appreciate any help getting it set up. I've been reading the manual over and over and the routing stuff is just not making sense to me. Once this is set up, I'll probably never change it if it works. :)
Any help GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!

I don't use SONAR but I believe the premise is all the same so......

MOTU 2408 MKII connected via TDIF to the DM3200, word clock connected as well , and I presume all setting are made in SONAR to accept 16 channels.

You have automation configured via 16 fader layer should you choose.

I never caught your routing in the DM3200, which should have (top half) M/L in 1 and the (bottom half) TDIF-1, and in your routing screen set up there as well. I'm not home now, but figured I could offer a tidbit until I do.

Anyway, if Im understanding correctly you want to come OUT of the MOTU back in to the DM someway. Use either SPDIF OUT of MOTU into a DIGITAL IN behind DM3200, and make a track accepting it's Digital input. Though at the same time you will already have output coming from the DM3200 via it's output, (because you have TDIF running through the board, so..... that's where I'm stumped a bit as to why you want output from the MOTU.

Thanks for the tidbit.
If I understand what you said, you are saying on the INPUT tab of routing screen for channel 1, use M/L 1 for "INP", and assign "RTN" to TDIF1-1 ? And presumably for all other 15 channels......

I need to be able to monitor several different headphone mixes while recording, but then monitor the MOTU Stereo output while later editing and mixing, etc. Just don't know how to get that back into board. Seems like on an old TMD-1000 I used to monitor the MOTU 1-2 on channel 9-10 and I think it was somehow routed there in the mixer.

I don't have the Tascam IF/FW card, but there is an ADAT input on MOTU - however, I've got all 3 TDIF cables connected and I think the MOTU can only handle the 3 banks (24 ch)

Correct in the routing, just as you stated.

Sorry about no pics yet, had a session soon as I got home.

Also, if you don’t need to use all 24 and want to route a two track out, remove 17-24 TDIF, then have 8 freed up track to route the (two track 1-2) from motu into there.

If what your saying about the TMD-1000 was true, then there is that possibility.

Also, if you use one of the Adat outputs from the MOTU it won’t work, since you’ve stated using all TDIF. If so, take off 17-24 TDIF, change in MOTU settings bank C to Adat, then on the DM, change 17-24 to accept Adat 1-8 as RTN.

Thanks. I've just discovered the trove of forum documentation files! I'm still using all 3 TDIF's and have Banks A and B set up for Ch 1-16. Bank C for 17-24. I set the MOTU to use Bank C 1-2 for it's Stereo Outs. Then assigned those to the DM3200 ch 31/32 and sent those to DM Stereo outs. I can now hear everything and all 16 M/L inputs are making it to the MOTU (and back.)

Now to tackle headphone mixes..........I found some helpful docs in here - but they were buried. I still want to avoid routing thru MOTU for cue mixes if poss to avoid latency. Some way to do this via AUX 1/2, 3/4. Will see.

Wish those docs would have showed up in my Google searches!
I'm getting there little by little.
Thanks again

So - HOW would someone on this forum use the DM-3200 and TDIFF connected MOTU to provide 4 different monitor mixes for a recording session? Surely someone has done this................
And if you have a solution, can you please provide cabling and routing details!
Thanks!!!!!!!!

Like you already found, use the 4 ASN SND outputs on the DM for 4 individual (mono) headphone mixes. No need for the Motu here. In the output routing screen, use the AUX selection as Source Select on the right, select ASN Send as Terminal Select in the middle and on the left put the two together. Now for each channel you can send audio to go with different levels to AUX 5-8 (IIRC, otherwise 1-4).

Arjun,
This is FANTASTIC!!! I've got the stereo headphone out patched to headphone amp main in, and those 4 aux sends patched to each of the 4 aux ins on the headphone MAE and I can blend the two. Fantastic!!!
Thanks so much. :)
