I am a bioacoustician interested in trying to get my Tascam DR-100 MK3's to collect timelapse recordings in scientific studies. I have automated bioacoustic recorders made specifically for this purpose (3x-4x the cost of the DR-100) but if I could accomplish this with the Tascam field recorders via a firmware mod the units would be ideal for this work. Any thoughts on how a custom firmware write might be accomplished?

I'm also very interested in learning even the feasibility of implementing a custom firmware on this device. I was thinking of just making some menu items more accessible or remapping buttons/switches. Some examples: replace the speaker switch with a backlight switch, only turn plug-in power on when `ext mic` is selected (if it doesn't already), allow the next button to be pressed while recording on hold, etc.
