M500 vs m300 series mixers

i know the 500s came first, but what really is the difference in tones? I know the 300b comes with phantom power while the regular 300's didn't

I'm looking for some darker pres to go along with a tape machine.

I currently have the tascam 388, but I think I want more channels by getting a 16 track reel to reel eventually.

I have used both models. I don't think there ois a lot of performance difference but more features and more paths and options.

Thanks for the reply, I didn't look too closely to the features between the two series, and will make my decision based on that.

I was just curious as to which eq and pres would be close to what I'm looking for
