Ministudio porta one no microphone sound

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this but I've picked up a tascam ministudio porta one and it's working great when I plug in my electric guitar but when I plug in my sm57 microphone I get no input. The volume meters on the top won't move even with the input and trim all the way up.


Do I need some sort of mic preamp to boost the signal?

it could be that the TR input works but the xlr doesn't, I can't even remember if they are separate or combi jacks
