Monitor vs Main out sound level/quality

Dose anyone know how to set the main output and the Large monitor output with the same volume the same quality of sound equally out of them?


The reason why I ask is I am having a problem with the main output being a better sound with more bass quality than the large monitor output...

More info needed:

1. What kind of monitoring system? Active or passive?

2. Are you using two different monitoring systems and switching between them?

3. Is there a subwoofer in the system?

4. Is the Master Fader in the same place when making monitoring comparisons?

I don't use the DM4800 with its built in dual monitoring capability. However, those that do will appreciate learning a lot more about your rig in order to offer anything close to usable advice.

Also - PLEASE!! Start a NEW THREAD with a FRESH SUBJECT line! If you post a new question in a thread pertaining to another matter, it's not only annoying to other users, but will interfere with your ability to gather attention to your problem.

I'm confused by the OP's question.
I'm not sure what you mean by "main" output.

In my case, I have two sets of monitors connected.
I have bigger monitors connected to the "Large" output.
I have smaller monitors connected to the "Small" output.

The Large and Small outputs sound very different because of the monitors I have connected.

In the block diagram, the L and S outputs share the same DAC, so I suspect they should be almost identical.

I'm not sure what you mean by "main" output.
I think he's talking about those XLR's back there on the top-left corner of the backplane. They are labelled as 'STEREO OUTPUT', instead of 'main', though.I've never used them, so can't help here.
 
If you set your small / large speaker pots to 100% the output level (and perceived sound quality) from these outputs and the stereo buss is pretty much equal on my system. I think the perceived "better sound" from the XLR stereo outs may be due to the higher "listening" level when the stereo fader and the spkr pots aren't "matched".

I use the spkr outs and pots to balance the send levels between the control room monitoring options (e.g. main and aurotone), whereas the stereo out is used for the mastering device or PA system. In addition there are the studio out ports - where the level is set in the control screen.

fwiw I use the XLR stereo outs as analog outputs to my DV-RA1000HD - that way the DM stereo fader functions as the master buss fader. When sending to the DV-RA my stereo fader is normally between 5 and 0, based on the input VU reading on the DV-RA...... so in this situation the dim switch is leveraged to make listening level appropriate.

You could match your stereo fader to the spkr out pots and submix to a buss pair then assign just that buss pair to the stereo outs, but that would defeat the versatility of the output options imo.
 
The XLR Stereo Outs on the back of the console are NOT for hooking speakers up to.
They are meant to send your Stereo Mix Bus to external devices.....Like CD Burners, or 2 Track Master Tape Machines.

Here is what the Manual has to say on it:
STEREO OUT Balanced XLR connections (1 ground, 2 hot, 3 cold), which output the stereo buss signals, which can be used to feed the analog inputs of a 2-track recorder, or a specialist chain of analog devices used for mastering.

Control Room Speakers are to be hooked up to the Large and Small 1/4 " TRS connectors.

There is also a connection for Studio Speakers.....1/4" TRS......which in the old days was used to playback, or communicate with, the performers in the studio.
This was handy if the performers were not wearing headphones.

True, but they ARE just another set of line level outs. There's nothing that special about the STEREO outs that would preclude you from using them as monitor outs. The CR outs are the exact same thing, (assuming they are also routing out the stereo buss) just in 1/4" balanced format. And they have their own knob. That's about it.
If you are OK with hooking up your smaller monitors for your control room to the CR outs and your bigger monitors for a hear on the final mix out of the Stereo out XLR's, that would work just fine. You would just have to make level adjustments with the stereo buss fader rather than the CR knob. Or, even better, keep the Stereo fader at unity and adjust your mix levels at the input channels.

There is one important difference between the various outputs, and that is how they react to SOLO. Some of it is down to settings, but when while tracking you want to hear only that singer's voice in the control room, you better not give him CR out in his cans...
