Portastudio 414 mkii volume issue, need help

Hello, I have the portastudio 414mkii, its worked great for me but lately it has started to have problems. After I record a take, regardless of the input, the volume of the recording gets quieter randomly, and then jumps back up over and over. This happens regardless of the cassette I use, so it’s not a tape issue, I’m guessing it has to be an issue when transferring to tape. It monitors perfectly fine when I am recording so I don’t think it’s an input issue either. Has this happened to anyone else? How can I resolve this and make the volume of the recording stay normal? Thank you

check and clean your tape heads and look into demagnetizing them. having a similar issue with a tascam porta 05 i’m working on. if your input volume is fine your recording amplifier is good, so it has to be the heads. check the alignment first
