Tascam 688 playback/recording speed issue

Hi all, hopefully someone can help me... I've been recording onto type I tape with no issues. Recently bought 2x unopened type II tapes - with both of the type II tapes i get really variable playback/recording speeds - slow/fast/slow - basically unusable.

When I switch back to type I tape, nil issues! What's going on?!

Capstan belt is probably stretched or bearing need oil. The type I tape will be under biased and also have 7ouS EQ applied. It is silly to use the wrong tape.
