hi i’m trying to multi track record out of ableton into the model 16/sd card but every time i load a song from sd card the audio from ableton cuts out and i have to disconnect usb cable and re route everything in the computer. is there a way to do this?

As I recall, this issue has been raised before in the Model 24/16/12 forum, which you can access from the home page of this site.
I'm not an owner/user of the Model series, so I can't help directly. But the first thing to do is check to be sure your Model 16 firmware, relevant drivers, the software, and the OS, are all up to date; and, per the owner manual "Introduction" section, assure the SD card is on the TASCAM tested/approved list.
Searching the 24/16/12 forum (search term "ableton" should be sufficient) will likely turn up the solution; and posting there introduces you to the community of helpful Model 24/16/12 owners. The advantage of searching first is it's likely you'll find the solution sooner than if you wait for a knowledgeable 24/16/12 owner to sign in and read your thread. Ableton solutions for the Model 12 and Model 24 are also likely to resolve Model 16 issues.
While you're in the 24/16/12 forum, look over the stickies for important information about the Model series as well as tips, videos, etc.
