I've now had two occasions where the band's have kept playing without the expected breaks, so I leave the DR-40 recording and my SD card filled up. So I lost what ever was going to be part of the current session with a File Error message and had to abandon the recording and power off the DR-40. Really it's my fault in the end. I've since installed a higher capacity SC card. I only record over a half hour of anything if I'm powered from a wall outlet to the USB jack, especially with some battery sucking condenser microphones on phantom power.
The unit's firmware is smart enough to know: the batteries are getting low; displays how much recording time is remaining; and can put the display to sleep at a set time. Maybe if there is a future firmware upgrade, they can use some of that information it senses, to (optionally) start a recording save with a margin of error on remaining storage capacity for the data rate & channel settings in use at the time.
