FW-1884 as midi controller of ableton with no firewire?

Hi folks my trusty (sorta) 13+ year old fw-1884 has just fried it's FW card so my usual practice of using it as a control surface in ableton is kaput.. I have set it up in MIDI CNTRL mode to go thru a separate midi interface into ableton and I am able to map the faders and nobs to the various controls within ableton with no prob... here is where i'm stumped: I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the faders to move remotely with outputed midi from ableton (ie act as normal motorized faders and follow the fader positions in ableton)

I can see the incoming midi on channel one on the top of the FW-1884 from ableton but the faders don't react... been banging my head on this problem all day, any help will be VERY appreciated!
