Mix Mode problem

I cannot seem to get the x48 to go into mix mode. I have a project captured, I can see audio on the tracks (I can export it and listen to it) but nothing shows up on the meters or goes to the SPDIF output from the master. I took it out of mixer bypass mode, but it doesn't seem to accept the command or something. Where is the "magic button"?
