i'm brainless and need help.

i have a question regarding a few things. first, panning. when listening through headphones, strumming the E string continuously and panning with the other hand, the signal travels from one ear to the other (even while recording)... but when i play back, the effect is lost. the sound only remains when the pan knob reaches the center position. any advice? i'd like to be able to pan a sound on a track after it's been recorded but i'm not sure if that's possible... for example: on track 1, i record a drum sample. when i rewind and play it back, why can't i spin the "pan" knob and hear it panning?

second, what does 1/L-2/R mean? and 3-4? i know they're supposed to be "groups", but what does that mean? why is that supposed to serve any purpose when each track is it's own individual track anyhow?

please write me and thanks a ton!
