Noise from internal mics DR-40

Hi,

I'm new to all this so please be gentle.

I Purchased a Tascam DR 40 to record my GF band practice but my problem is:

if I have the Input level anywhere over 40 I have noise on the recording. Also I seam to have to set the input level higher than 40 even if I want to record my own voice from less than 12 inches away which again gives me horrible noise.

I am just using the built in Mics with standard settings as it came out the box.

Is this an active forum, I'm only after advise if this is normal for this recorder so I can return it if its faulty.
