I’ve had a 388 for the last 8 or so years and love it, but am entertaining the idea of getting a stand-alone machine so I can more easily use other boards with it. I have limited space. Did Tascam ever make a machine that’s effectively just the tape part of the 388? I’d still like to be able to play my old tapes..

You can always use the buss inputs-tape in- and tape outputs to use the transport "stand alone". A fitted wooden cover over the mixer section would give you space for another mixer.

I would think the TSR8 would do the job but I would get away from cassette format track widths and the TSR8 would do that but a Tascam 38 is the better idea.
