Have any of you had luck using the Portacapture X8 reliably as an audio interface with an iPhone? Specifically, I'm using it to mix the built-in stereo mics, an SM58 for vocals, and a 1/4" from an instrument pickup. Adding a touch of reverb to the main mix, then recording a performance video on the iPhone in the default Apple camera app. On the PC X8, I've tried 48kHz/24bit and 48kHz/32bit settings and recording simultaneously to the SD card in the X8. On the iPhone, it's either 1080p/30fps or 4k/32fps, and there are no audio-specific settings.
If I have the camera app open, on video mode, and plug in the X8 I just need to say "No" to the 1.5A question, and it seems to work reliably -- the audio is also great, much, much better than the phone mic. Problem is, every once in a while I'll do something and get the dreaded FS MISMATCH message. After that, no audio is passed between the X8 and the iPhone and I end up with videos with no audio at all. I could edit the video and mix in the audio from the X8, but that significantly slows down workflow -- good to have that option for sure, but not for this particular project.
The best I can figure is that that iPhone is switching sample rates when I change apps or go to the home screen. If I move out of the camera app and go to photos, for example, that can often trigger the FS MISMATCH error on the TASCAM. Unfortunately, when I go back to the camera app and record another video, it doesn't reset and I get no audio. Unplugging and replugging the USB cable is the only way I've found to get it to work again.
One challenge is knowing if it's working or not -- I might try a different camera app that has an audio level indicator.
Any ideas on what else I could do differently?
Thanks!
Alan
