Tascam 488, Porta two
Greetings!
I have owned a tascam 488 mkii for a while and recently purchased both a 488 mki and Porta Two for parts on ebay.
The 488 mki won't play or stop, from what I've gathered it's a belt issue. I purchased the belt and I'm waiting for it to arrive.
Same thing with the Porta two, the tape heads are in an engaged state and I can't even fit a tape in it. Ordered that belt set as well and I'll be fixing her up when they show up.

When I get inside the 488, I'd like to also do the direct out mod for all 8 channels. There's a dude on ebay who does this mod but he doesn't care to share any wiring diagrams. Does anyone have any insight on where to pull the signal from? If not I'm sure I could play around with it and find the signal on the fader. If i can avoid having to poke around with the machine disassembled that would be ideal.

I would also like to look into coming up with some kind of screen mod as a backlight would be nice. The 488 mki screen is a bummer compared to the mkii. Has anyone here ever looked into doing something like this? If I can get an OLED screen working the 488 mki I think that would be pretty baller.

TLDR here is what I hope to achieve.
- 8 1/4 inch outputs for each channel. I plan to make a 3d printable drill stencil to make it as clean as possible.
- Figure out the pinout for the LCD and design an adapter pcb to use a modern backlit LCD ideally and Oled
- Potentially figure out how to add 2 xlr inputs and phantom power

If anyone has any insight please chime in, thank you
