I don't think I had been working with Nu Finish back then but I am sure it would help but now sure if it was the resolution to this kind of problem. This was with relatively new SM911 tape. I have used Nu Finish on cassette decks and reel decks with observed changes and so I know it does help/ The Surfactant acts as a lubrication.
