DM4800
Hi folks,

I just thought I'd share a few pics of my new studio desk that I built for my DM4800. I was really inspired by Gary Jackson's studio desk so I decided to design and build my own. As you can probably conclude I based my design on the Argosy look.

Hey Justin, thats great, really nice job. I really like the screen you put into the desk. Is it a touch screen?

I was wanting to do the same thing with mine but I couldn't find one at the time as it was a little while ago now.

Dude, fantastic!

Just one question...was it cheaper than the Argosy desk?

Cheers

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your comments. I was so impressed with your desk that I decided to try and build my own too.
You can never have to much screen real estate. It's just a regular LCD. I did consider a touch screen to put in there. I made the space large enough for 24" so if I want to upgrade in the future I can. Oh yeah all up materials including paint and fittings were about $600-$700. The $6000+ Australian price for a basic Argosy desk with no customization was a bit excessive.

Cheers,

Justin

Yeah thats exactly why I built mine, argosy is good but way to expensive for MDF or Fibre board as most other countries call it..

I must admit seeing yours makes me want a screen in the desk..! I feel like I need another screen.. hah.

Gary

I have my inbuilt screen on an arm so I can easily pull it out and turn it to landscape if necessary. Works well.
I'm sure Argosy are great quality but I also think the high price tag has to do with what we call the Australia tax. Everything is always so much more expensive here.

Super awesome. Just plain ol' Super awesome. If you have the build plans please share! Again, Super Awesome.

That's a really nice setup,thanks for sharing.

When I was building my studio (pretty much from scratch about 4 years ago) I looked seriously at the various Argosy desks. Esthetically they're great, but for my needs I couldn't justify them - especially for the cost. I felt the Dash Studio concepts were more useful and I ended up building a desk based on a Dash design, but using better quality materials and adding some 'custom' features. The price tag was about the same as an offshore 'Strat(tm)' knockoff.

Hi Jamsire,

I can upload some build pics if that helps. Enjoy.

Awesome - once I saw the welded steel, I was immediately out of my league.

Beautiful job. That's a fantastic looking desk. Must have been a lot of work. What kind of wood did you use on the sides?

Very nice setup.
That is beautiful!

I'm hoping you are monitoring on some other speakers for precision tasks.
I suspect the dual computer monitor screens in the main audio plane will seriously mess with the truth of what you are hearing.

The desk and studio look great!

Congrats!

Justin:

You did an excellent job. You should consider doing custom builds for others. That's certainly beyond my skill set.

My partner and I just put together an Argosy desk for my DM-3200. The quality of the Argosy is very good (though I would not say great). I am most impressed with what you did with the "built in" computer screen. We've got our main screen mounted on the wall behind the desk. The second screen will be on an arm mounted to a sidecar rack to the right of the Argosy in between the Argosy and iso booth. (See pictures).

Our setup is still a work-in-progress. We're customizing the Argosy to setup another rack bay for more hardware to the left of the DM. We plan to get a pair of Distressors and a Manley Massive Passive. I'm giving a hard look at the Neve Portico II as well.

We still have to paint and treat & tune the room. Hopefully all done within 2 months.

Thanks for your comments. Yeah a few people have said that. I may consider doing custom builds for people. Half of the time involved is in the design process.

Your setup looks great! I like the wall mounted screen. Can't go wrong with the portico.

You should do it. I seem to recall reading in Mix that the guy who started Argosy initially built his own custom desk for his Mackie 8 Buss.

Thanks, though we still have so much stuff to do with painting, sound treatment, etc. But still we are able to do sessions at the moment. I can't wait until it gets to "dream studio" status. Right now, my setup is in "trying to fall asleep" mode.

Yeah, I definitely want to audition the Portico. Do you have one?
