DP-004 producing master mix with little volume drops

Hi all. I have a song that sounds OK during playback in multi-track mode, but produces a mix with many intermittent and small volume drops. The recording was a bit hot and did peak the VU meter. Is this the reason for my bad master mix? I tried dropping the volume during mixdown but it didn't help. Anyone encounter this symptom?

I lowered the track volume when mixing down again, but still got the volume glitches.

Workaround: This was just a 2-track stereo live recording, so I used the WAVE track export feature to get the two channels off the DP-004 without mastering. As expected, the glitches were not there. I then copied them to a computer and merged them into a stereo WAV using Audacity.
