Long time Tascam user

My first Tascam product back in the nineties was the portastudio 8 track cassette recorder. I think it was the 488. Now I have the US-428 which I bought new, old stock from a local dealer years ago. I still like it but am wondering if there would be a significant improvement in the sound quality of my recordings if I upgraded, or added a a/d converter and some higher end preamps through the digital input.
