16x08 pops and clicks without DAW

so my wife purchased this unit for Christmas. I have nothing but problems.
I'm running Windows 10 on a Lenovo Edge laptop. 8 gigs ram core i7 system.
I still have my us-1641 which will not work on windows 10. 16x08 driver 1.04

Here is my scenario:
I hook up the unit and connect the usb to my laptop. no problem. Installed the driver .. then POP noise are happening through my monitor and headphone? If i launch fl studio the poping goes away. hmmmm
so basically i have to have a daw running to stop the noise.
second issue.
I can only play my keyboard using channel 9 and 10 if its hooked up to my pc?
anyone else have this issue? any resolutions?

So it appears Windows Driver 1.04 does not play well with other usb devices. I had to uninstall my current MOTIF USB drivers then reinstall the 16x08 driver, then install the MOTIF USB.

I still need to have the usb hooked up to my computer so I can play my Motif thru it. what gives? i must be doing something wrong. Right? should be powered on and ready to go.
I can't believe this unit can't be used without a computer. can it?
