Benefits of using the user defined layer?

Can someone explain the benefits of using the user defined layer. I get that I can place channel strips, busses, and auxes side by side on a layer. Is there anything else I am missing?

If you watch my tutorial, you will find a lot of "extra" MIDI Controller functionality with the UDL. I do videos in both Pro Tools and Cubase, but the information can translate to any other DAW.
