So after applying a new belt and cleaning one of the loading gears that prevented anything from happening I now have a annoyingly happy bouncing heads deck. It looks like this:
but does it as soon as I turn the power on, regardless of having a tape in it which is weird. It seems as though something is up with a sensor. I was hoping this is one of those ‘common’ problems as with the loading gear, bit I couldn’t find a lot about it. Anybody?

Managed to solve it by tightening the screws in the cassette cavity.

Hello! I have a similar problem, minus the bouncing. When I press play, the playhead moves into position, plays a second or so and then retracts. Which screws did you tighten?

The 464 is one of the models with the Gear C and all the hardened grease in it. If the transport is acting up get it fixed before it eats your tape. It is not going to fix itself. The hard grease is already stopping the feedback to the mechanism controller so that is what this is.
