Direct outs

I am mystified about the direct outs on my Tascam SX 1 LE. Logic would suggest that if I route the direct outs of the HD to the ADAT these should show up on the other side of my optical cable. The physical Toslink connection to my TC Electronic X 48 interface does not result in any presence of levels.
My interface shows locked to ADAT incoming but no signals appear in my NEAR mixer display.
An analogue stereo from the SX connected through a trs cable shows a correct level on my inputs 5 and 6.
Any suggestions about why I cannot see any signals through the ADAT from the SX?

I don't have the same set up but I wonder if you would have better luck locking the console to the interface. I know my old PTLE would do the same thing. Again, I know its a different dog but it might work.
