DR-22WL random distortion

I record music in my church. I place the recorder on a front seat about 2 feet off the floor. (best i can do). It normally records very well, but sometimes one track or both will distort for about a half second. It may happen a couple of times during one piece of music. Could it possibly be caused by someone walking in front of the recorder about a foot away? It seems to happen during parts of the service where people are walking across in front of it. Thanks.
