DR-40 not recognizing XLR microhone Shure SM-58

I tried connecting the Shure SM-58 via an expensive XLR cable to both left and right neutrik ports but it does not work for either of them. I am receiving no signal and evidence on the recorder and upon hearing the recordings on the computer that it is picking up the external microphone.

Did you set the EXT IN switch on the left side of the unit to 'MIC'?

Yes that has been done, it still does not work.
