DR-40X vs Portacapture X8

Hello,

I’m new to the forum but have been using Tascam products since the late 80s (first purchase was a Portastudio Porta 05). I’m looking at setting up one of the above units to track guitar parts as individual files to later transfer to a DAW. The guitar goes through a preamp/DI before the recorder, so line level recording.

From what I understand, there is a mode on the DR-40X that would allow me to record mono tracks through the left input while playing along with a prerecorded backing track on tracks 1/2.

Will the DR-40X keep new files each time I re-record a take? Or does it overwrite whatever file I have just created?

With the Portacapture X8, can I select different tracks to record to from a single input to get, say four takes on individual tracks? Or are inputs dedicated to specific tracks?

Also, reading some posts here on the X8 it sounds like there have been some issues with locking up, etc. Have those been worked out?

The X8 is twice the price of the DR-40X - I’m not opposed to paying more if it is that much better for my use case but unsure at the moment.

@Nogoodnamesleft, the DR-40X overdub recording offers two options:
- separate, the input signal is recorded on a new file and is not mixed with the playback track;
- mix, the input signal is mixed with the playback track and recorded on a new file.
In any case, recording is always in stereo and the playback track is not overwritten. You can find all the details in the reference manual, downloadable from the Tascam website.
