DR-44WL Recording Multiple Tracks

I apologize upfront for my ignorance, but just recently tried to use a DR-44WL to record a project for class. I did everything I could think or to try to record three tracks and failed. I was trying to record the two internal tracks and hooked up a Rode Mic to the external, but I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to record all three at once. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have to say that I would also appreciate some hints about how to use that function. The instructions in the manual are not very elaborate in that regard.
