DP24SD
Hello!

So I’m helping a friend set up his podcasting studio / equipment and I’m helping him use the DP24SD, I’m having this issue: the volume coming in does not change with the faders, for example; I was playing music on one channel and recording voice on another and noticed that even when I brought the fader down on the music the signal coming in was the same and that’s exactly how it was recorded. Help? Thanks!

That's how the device works. The faders control the send to the stereo bus.

I suggest you watch Phil Tipping's videos and read the Production sticky posts to understand how the machine works.

I agreee with mjk. Some things are not intuitive, and with all due respect to Saxomohawh some things are not explained well in the manual. Phil Tipping's videos are excellent.

Simply stated, the DP machines act like inline recording consoles, where the faders control the 2-mix and the input levels are on separate controls. Anyone who is used to a live sound console would expect the faders to adjust track level. But, in reality the faders control the level from the tracks to the stereo bus/2-mix. You adjust the levels to the tracks with the trim controls and the output controls on your devices or FX.

What they're telling you is that you control the input level with the trim knobs for inputs A thru H. That determines what gets recorded. I like to aim at -12 to -6 db on the meter. The track faders determine how much of that signal is routed to the stereo bus (the stuff you hear). The two are independent of each other.

Production Tips sticky, posts #27 and #67 have everything you need to know about how to apply the Trim Knobs properly when laying down tracks using Mic and Line inputs.

I know that people want instant answers to such questions, but we've taken the time to prepare detailed answers and put them in sticky posts at the top of the forum. Occasionally there is a new question/issue raised and the solution gets added to the knowledge base.

There is one quirk to the Forum search function, and that is, it defaults to Google results. One should click the "Site Results" tab when searching the Forum.

I don't want to derail this topic, but I can understand how people don't easily read through the sticky topics. Especially the Production Tips topic is very hard to navigate, not only because of the number of pages, but also the variety in subjects.

And it's a pity, because there is a massive amount of useful information in there! Maybe some sort of index post could be added on top of the topics (I mean as a first post), with the individual subjects listed and hyperlinked? I don't own a Portastudio, but if I did I'd find that very useful!

@Arjan P of course you are right. Several of us who are active in that Forum have discussed the need to prune the topics, and Mark has created a preliminary index to the first one we're going to tackle! Thanks for reminding us of the need to get going on that!
