Help with US-600 issue

hello,

just wondered if anyone has encountered this issue. please excuse my lack of knowledge with regards to technical jargon (not a technical person!)

i use the US-600 soundcard to record synths and drum machines.
all has been good for a few years, then now suddenly-

-when the input level is too high, the soundcard starts switching its connectivity to the laptop on and off constantly, whilst all the red OL lights flicker. it is effectively ejecting itself from the laptop, until i switch off the connected synth/drum machine, and hook it up again with over-carefully low levels of input.

if that makes any sense....

is this a lost cause? might end up having to put a new better one on the old credit card.
