Hooking the 2488 to a DAW

Has anyone had any experience using the 2488 to provide additional inputs to a DAW? Specifically, I retired my 1st generation 2488 for Pro Tools about 2 years ago. My focusrite interface has 8 inputs but it can also add 8 more inputs via an optical (ADAT) input. I was trying to add my 2488 as a slave to add the 8 additional inputs and saw where people are hooking two 2488s together for 16 tracks using MIDI cables. Is this possible? Thoughts?
