How to get a good slammed distorted vocal sound

Share your tips here for getting that warm saturated even distorted vocal sound. A good example of this so yummy nd is The Sonics version of Do You Love Me (its on YouTube if you look).

I read that '60s garage bands had this soind because they often ran their vocals through guitar amps so that is something I'm going to try and report back.

BTW I am using the Tascam DP-03.
 
If that's a "good" vocal sound, well....

Buy some really cheap dynamic mics... I'm talking Radio Shack (try Craigslist). Try plugging them into various guitar overdrive stompboxes until you get the grit you want. You'll get more dirt and more control this way than by plunging into a guitar amp, which may or may not break up as you'd like.
