If not importing, can Line-in/input be used instead?

If not using import method to transfer a wav file from a computer to a digital Tascam recorder, am I able to record directly to the recorder by playing a computer wav file through 1/4" cable converted to a 3.5 mm plug? I don't have this kind of cable yet, but would like to know the possibility before getting one. Thanks
