Meter levels don't reflect fader position

On playback, is there a way to get the meter levels to reflect fader levels, i.e., the actual volume/loudness level as controlled by the fader?

this drove me mad, I would reduce the fader and the track STILL peaked over 0db lol, not until I dropped the fader all the way down did I realise it wasn't affecting the meters hehe. I really thought I'd gone crazy.....I still might be mwahahahaha

It would have been nice to have a "toggle" option: directing the meters to either reflect recorded levels or fader-directed output levels.
