Newbie doing something wrong - Please help: DR - 100MKII

Hello,

I was given a barely used DR-100MKII. I feel that I have read and followed the instruction manual but for some reason, I am unable to able to playback a recording through the inbuilt speaker but I can listen with headphones.

Is there any reason why I can only hear my recording when I have headphones plugged in and not through the inbuilt speaker?

My settings

Mic Gain: M
+48v: off
Auto Limiter: On
Speaker: On
Input: UNI
Mix Balance: Max(20)

Frustratingly I know there must be some simple solution. but I haven't been able to work it out.

Any help is appreciated.

The speaker only works without headphones connected - and the Speaker switch on the back of the unit set to ON. Also not in recording (standby) mode. (p.8, 12 and 25 of the user manual)
