No sound Tascam 22-2

just got a Tascam 22-2 machine replaced belt and works well mechanically but very low level/no sound on playback No reel machine expert but have some experience with electronics. Where to start?

Verify the tape path is clean.

Cleaning is certainly a possibility with decks especially when one used an old Ampex tape that is sticky and the user does not know about sticky tape.
Another possibility is a power supply issue of there is a mute relay in that on one occasion I have had the transistor that turns it on go out.
