PortaStudio 414 - no recording level on meter(s)

I have a PS 414 that I bought 20 years ago, used briefly and then put in storage. I just took it out and am going through the owner's manual 'step by step operations guide'. I am doing a simple recording test with an electric guitar plugged directly in to Mic/Line In, but the meters do not show any input level. I can hear the guitar clearly in the headphones. Listening to the recording I just made and it is blank. Channels 1-4 are all doing this. Is there a setting that could cause this?
I recall testing it when I bought it and it was working.

Solved... turns out the eBay AC adapter I bought because it claimed to be a direct replacement for the Tascam does not have the correct current. The OEM adapter is 650mA and the eBay unit is 200 mA. It has the correct voltage and polarity, so the Tascam powered up and some features did work.
If you need a replacement adapter make sure to verify the polarity and the current. Ebay and Amazon have many listings that claim to be replacements for the PS 414 and MF-P01 that are not correct.
