Portastudio 424 MKII Won't Play

I've had this Portastudio 424 MKII for about a year and a half now, and it was working great until around July of this year. One day, a cassette got stuck in the loading mechanism because the play head wouldn't retract. Figured it was a belt issue, set it aside and took some time away. Just came back to it, ordered new belts, and put them in. Still, the loading mechanism won't budge. I finally got it to pull back by pressing on what I think is the tension loader, to be honest I'm not super familiar with the terms for the parts. But it's connected to the gears, and now when the machine is powered on it will randomly push the head forward again... only to immediately pull back. Any ideas?
