Greetings,

I have been using an AKG Perception 200 for vocals and I'm looking for something that sounds a bit more natural. I'm wondering what others are using.

Our music is mostly acoustic and light rock, no screaming. Vocals are in the baritone range. Budget is low.

Thanks,
Henry

Henry, if you're not getting a "natural" sound with a large diaphragm condenser microphone made by AKG (one of the most respected names in the business), replacing it with another respectable name brand microphone isn't going to fix that issue. I suggest you save your money and revisit your recording techniques.

Gravity Jim, thanks for the suggestions.

MJK - I am constantly revisiting my recording techniques. That's why I'm asking folks on this forum for their experiences and recommendations. Every mic has a different voice and I'm curious if anyone has noticed that one is better than another for a given application. In this case, the male baritone voice.

Henwilli, I think what mjk meant was the AKG mic you're using has a flat, neutral signature at a distance of about 1 meter on axis, making it very "natural" because it doesn't color the sound. It will reproduce accurately whatever the natural sound is of what is placed in front of it.

It also has a low end roll off switch that helps preserve that neutral characteristic if using it close up to an instrument or vocalist.

Since your question isn't something specific to the DP-24/32, you might get a broader response by re-posting in the Recording 101 Forum of this site.

You'll find that forum by scrolling a ways down on this site's home page.;)

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear in my initial request for input, The problem I'm trying to solve is to improve upon the sound I'm getting when I plug a condensor mic into my DP32-SD. I've been using this mic for many years and I'm thinking about upgrading and wanted to know of any experiences other folks had with the DP32, a condensor mic and the male baritone voice. I've glanced at other forums here and elsewhere and I will take my query there. Thank you.

Henry, if you are using the mic pres on the DP-32, then that is the limiting factor. You are not hearing what that AKG mic is capable of doing.

You want to know what we are using? Ok, here it is:

A $30 Tascam TM-80. But, more importantly, I'm using the Soundcraft Ghost mic pre and EQ, and sending that line level signal to the DP-32 line input (all on the patchbay). Before you drop cash on a new mic and find out that it doesn't sound any better, I suggest you try an external mic pre. Maybe you already have an unused analog mixer on hand.
