Tascam 244 - Control mechanism engages then pulls out without playing

I have recently replaced the bets of my 244 as there were non existent. However now the control mechanism engages when any of the transport controls are requested but it does not perform the, the mechanism just retracts after a second or two. Think it could possibly be the motor as there doesn't seem to be any hum when the system is turned on.
Any input or resolution would be greatly appreciated

Was this a machine you just got? As in did it work before? If yes, you replaced the capstan and drive belt, which will allow the transport to engage and the capstan to turn, but then nothing happens and it retracts. Have you looked into the idler tire well and see if they are stuck? That can happen and it will cause what you are describing.
