Tascam TSR-8 not playing

Hi All

Received my Tascam TSR-8 today. Unit looks mint, all inputs and outputs working fine.

However, it won't play! When pushing play it clunks then stops. It rewinds and fast forwards, however, when half way through rewinding the motors slow then stop. Without the spool the motors run super fast both rewinding and fast forwarding with no slowing. There is no unusual noise when rewinding or fast forwarding.

When I manually move the tension capstans, play does work and the motors run, the same with record and the record light indications.

How good is the tape you are using, the symptoms are the sign of sticky tape?

Thanks for the reply. I was under the assumption that the tape was in good condition. Unfortunately this was not the case. The heads were really dirty (literally after trying a rewind) so I cleaned them. My next step is to source some clean, suitable tape. I'll go from there.
