If you find that the input level control knob on your DR-44WL is difficult to adjust - too tight - you can make a simple adjustment to ease it.
With a very small Phillips screwdriver, remove the two knob guard screws and the guard itself, then pull the knob straight out of the recorder. You'll see a small dimple in the center of the knob disk that mates with a corresponding bump on the inside center of the guard.
The adjustment tightness is due to insufficient clearance of the knob dimple and the guard bump. Rotating a small drill bit with your fingers, make the dimple in the knob slightly deeper. Insert the knob into the recorder until flush and reattach the guard. If the control is still too tight, repeat.
