TSR-8
Hi all, I've recently got a lapped rec/play head for my TSR-8 as my original was quite worn and my tech said it may not even warrant re-lapping. I'll send it away for evaluation at a later date but I put the new head in, set tape contact and azimuth and then adjusted all the biases and levels per the manual. Literally everything went really well except for track 8. Erase and playback are fine. The issue I'm having is setting up the record levels. The manual says to provide a 1Khz tone at -10 (316mvac) so the meters read 0. Everything is good 1-7 but on channel 8 there seems to be some oscillation/variation with the final setting. I can adjust the rec level pot to read 316 but it fluctuates between 310-322 or so and the leds flicker between 0 and +1 on the level meters. All the other tracks are rock solid. Switch on the back panel is set to -10 so track 8 shouldn't be trying to sync but it's weird. I haven't tried pulling/reseating or swapping with another card. Is it easy to pull those cards out? It's fairly clean inside, not a corroded nightmare. I can also hear less highs and almost a low popping(?) sound when listening back on 8. Not really sure how to describe it. I'll redo all the calibrating on that channel when I get home in case I missed something. Just wondering if anyone has experienced the same.
Tape is SM911
MRL tape is 250nw at 15ips with 30-50-125-250-500-1k-2.5k-10k-12.5k and 16k frequencies plus 1k long test tone.
Heads cleaned with either 99% iso or acetone.
Since it's a semi-fixed head there's no vertical adjustment, only azimuth and head path contact so not sure if I could have gone wrong on the install.

I decided to revisit the head mounting after I swapped cards and the issue stayed on track 8. I re-adjusted the tape path and reset the azimuth and it seems to have cleared it up so I'll call it a win for now. I wanted to update the thread with the apparent fix.
