So I’m planning to run my new 424 through my pioneer SX201 receiver and thence into my pioneer CTW 530R dual cassette deck. I will use the receiver to run sound from the 424 through my speakers (when I’m not using headphones). I will use the pioneer cassette deck to record mix downs from the 424 (and subsequently to create copies of the stereo mix down tapes). I will also use the pioneer deck just to listen to random old cassette tapes through the receiver and speakers. I am looking at the input and output connections of these three devices and I’m not sure how to hook them up properly.

The receiver has Tape 1/DAT and Tape 2/MONITOR. Each of these has right and left for play and record:

The tape deck has left and right for input record and output play:

Of course, the 424 has left and right for monitor and left and right for line out

So given my plans of (a) occasionally just playing random tapes from the tape deck through the receiver to the speakers, (b) monitoring what is going on on the 424 through the receiver and out the speakers as I record and mix, and (c) mixing down from the 424 through the receiver to the tape deck, what do I do with this handful of RCA cables I’m holding?
Thanks!

I would avoid adding unnecessary layers of electronics between the 424 & your mixdown deck.
- Connect the 424 directly to the mixdown deck.
- Connect your mixdown deck to the reciever.
That should give you everything you need.
Since all your recording will be acoustic instruments, 100% of your monitoring will be done via headphones anyway.
If you wish to listen to preliminary 424 settings thru the speakers pre-mixdown, you should still be able to do that as long the record function on your mixdown deck is activated.
