Why does the MX2424 initially to 01:00:00:00 on the top line of the LCD? Is there some logical necessity for this? Or is this the (unquestioned) way it's always been done? Perspiring minds want to know.
It's because (at least back in the day) some time coded devices didn't like rolling through zero. It screwed up their sync. Therefore it was normal to start a session at 1 hour to avoid rolling through zero.
I had read this before. It makes some limited sense. Followup... is it possible to change that 1 hour offset to something else (like 00:00:00:00 since I'm not syncing to anything) as the default bootup? I'm looking at the MIDI code and see how when presetting my system. For my use... I don't need that offset.
You can change it to 00:00:00:00. Not quite sure how you get directly there, but you can just rewind the session. I think if I was synching to midi timecode I would still start it at 1 hour. It makes no difference in operation & you are trying to do something that is the reason people use the offset in the first place. But each to their own...
I just looked through the manual for the MX2424 and it says nothing about changing the default start time that I could find. I used 2424s for well over a decade (still have two in the studio), but I haven't in several years now. I loved those machines, but growing track counts at high sample rates forced me away.
I seem to recall in the MX View software there may have been a way to do it, but it's been awhile. I do know that when I loaded a project the project loaded at its starting point, so perhaps you could create a project that would act as a template which you could load after the machine boots.
Let me know if you need the manual. I've got all the literature I believe they ever published. Happy to send it up to dropbox for you to download.
You can change the value using bank 200 command 230 "TapeMode Start"
But there is some limitation depending of the Firmware version.
What version do you use in your MX2424?
Before version 3.01, when rolling back over the SMPTE number of 00:00:00:00, the MX-2424 would incorrectly increment backwards from 24 hours. It is the reason why they start at 01:00:00:00.
I use an MX2424 and all my project start 00:00:00:00 or the time I decide (positive value).
Take care that there is some limitation (for all version after 3.01): here under, a copy/past from release note V301:
With version 3.01, the MX-2424 will now display timecode as a negative number rather than a positive number when it rolls backwards over 00:00:00:00
By using the +/- key (Shift 0), it is possible to enter and locate to a negative timecode position directly. Such values may also be captured and stored in any of the timecode registers (In, Out, etc) or in a memory location.
NOTE: The MX-2424 does not permit recording or editing prior to zero. If the playhead is currently in the "negative region" and the machine is put into record, the MX-2424 will wait until it reaches zero before actually recording. The record LED will flash quickly to indicate this special "record-pending" state.
When rolling past 23:59:59:29, the MX-2424 will now attach a "+" sign to the beginning of the timecode display to indicate that the transport position has moved into the next 24 hour period. These "+" numbers may be captured, located to, and stored in a memory location. Unlike the egative numbers, it is not possible to enter them manually.
Although the MX-2424 will allow recording beyond 24 hours, you can not do any editing or MX-View automation before or after the 24-hour range.
