Model 12
Greetings all,
Currently, when I finish a recording on the Model 12, I shut down the Model 12 and physically pull out and use the Model 12's memory card to copy all the track files over to my Win 11 PC for editing with Audacity. I would like to do this directly via cabling. I have an available USB-C port on my laptop PC, so I can avoid using my docking station ( I understand this is an unreliable connection).
Question, Can I connect Model 12 USB-C Out to Laptop PC USB-C In?
Question, Can I connect Tascam Model 12 USB-C Out to Laptop PC Thunderbolt In?
Question, Am I required to only use the supplied Tascam USB-C to USB-A white cable?

I'd like your opinion regarding whether is is better to do the memory card swap, as described, or to try to do it by cabling. I need tips, tricks, traps and pitfalls. I would be lovely to have a native guide!

I hardly ever pull the card out to transfer files. Have you tried putting the model 12 in storage mode? I would just use the cable you have and put the 12 in storage mode via the Menu button on the model 12.

Why wouldn’t you use the cable connection? Or are you looking forward to disassembling yr unit to replace a worn-out card reader (from constant insertion/removal of SD card)??😬

I keep a USB cable connecting my DP & puter full-time, for file xfer, backups, trk import/export…the only time I ever remove the SD card is to change to another one (I use various cards to keep my projects sorted out).

And aren’t the Modelxx’s MEANT to be connected to a puter (for ‘12/SAW interaction)? That’s what I heard…I don’t actually know. I wouldn’t use a Modelxx at gunpoint.

Morgelec and Shredd, hanks for the reply. Unless there is something special about the Tascam white cable, I will try a USB-C double ended cable. Shredd, you correctly anticipated my worry about wearing out the SD slot. Smart! Morgelec, I will explore Storage mode, as you advise. If this is how I can export 12 channels of audio for my Audacity proggie, that should work a treat! Tks.

Hey @GlennM ...yeah, there's plenny posts about various externally-accessed components (like card readers, switches, jacks, yada) that have worn out/malfunctioned 'cuz of excessive use. I make every effort to avoid this, and "use" my controls as gently as is possible (even when I'm raging over my 46th take of a 16-bar solo I just can't seem to nail!!! 😖)

I'm no rocket-surgeon (nor a Tascam-tech!) - but I suspect that the USB cable that came with your M12 is NOT "special" (in fact, is probably the cheapest they could supply!). If you have a decent USB-C to USB-C, I suspect it'll work fine (pretty much all puter's USB ports are backward-compatible...at least for NOW!).

Good luck!
