Having seen many videos about how to and how not to apply Equalizing, I wondered how many people are actualy using Eq. in a more creative way instead of cutting a bit here to create space and boosting a bit there..
My way of applying eq to build my mix is having a different approach I guess. I am not saying the other ways are wrong but for me it is just easier to have an image of what I would like to achieve with Eq.
I know people say you can place the instrument or vocals in the mix but this leaves too many options open and you run the risk to become satisfied with an Eq setting because it just sounds ok.
What I prefer to do instead is to aproach the eq just like a reverb in terms of space. When you are listening to a singer in a hall for example at a certain distance the eq of the vocal will be different from the eq in any other space.
This gives me a much better idea of how to apply the eq settings.
Just wanted to share this and hopefuly it may help some of you struggling with Eq settings.Feel free to leave any comments.
Btw. The effect can be heard in a video I found on you tube named
"natural reverb" by Jacob Banks.
