Is there any way to tell the age of Ampex tape by looking at the logos and packaging? I know how the date code works, but oftentimes ebay ads don’t display a picture of it. It would be handy to know how to identify post-1994 tape by looking at it.

You may know more about that than me. What's the point of buying Ampex tape with such long history of some stickiness when new fresh tape exists?

Yes but if it all end up being stick they really what have you really got? People go chasing old stuff for no good reason. There really is no problem using 456 if it is of the better production is is still a very good tape. It is just some times people want to sell it more than what the SM911 costs.
