Noise when burning CD's with CDRW788

Yes I know it's old, but I still love it. After writing and finalizing to a CD, the audio track has a type of static upon playback. It sounds like a static discharge or a dirty pot and it occurs every 15 or 20 seconds. The noise is not present when I record a feed from the stereo mix or the master (RCA output) to an analog recorder so its apparently not in the mix. It does not occur when playing back a commercially recorded CD in the drive. To those of you really smart guys, can I pickup an scsi cdrw burner and replace it inside the case.
